UX is concerned with how something works and whether it solves the right problem. UI is concerned with how it looks, reads and responds.
Where they overlap
Hierarchy, feedback and affordance belong to both. A beautiful interface with a broken flow fails, and so does a logical flow nobody can read.
Why teams separate them
Separating the work helps focus, but the best outcomes come when both are considered together from the start.
